How to make your podcast suck

  1. Ask the same questions your guest is asked on every other podcast they’ve been on.
  2. Ask very open-ended questions.
  3. Ask questions you already know the answer to.
  4. Make sure to show off how smart you (the host) are.
  5. Leave in all of the false starts. (The host asks a question, and the guest immediately starts talking, usually something like, “Let’s see here…” or, “That’s a great question..I…I…think…that…uhm…”, or “Well…”, and then starts the actual good answer.)
  6. Don’t edit out the “Welcome to the show!” and “Thanks so much for having me on. I’m excited to be here!” boilerplate that every recording starts with.
  7. Leave in all the uhs/uhms/ and random tangents the guest goes on, no matter how they relate to the initial question or conversation as a whole.
  8. Never, under any circumstance, ask a follow-up question. When the guest is done talking, immediately move on to the next question you have.
