A New Direction for The Blog

For the last five years, I’ve deeply loved reading and learning.

Throughout that time, I’ve thought about (and tried) different ways to share what I learn that are 1) helpful and enjoyable for other people and 2) helpful, enjoyable, and not too difficult for me to pull off with consistency.

I’ve yet to find something that works, but I have a new experiment.

For years, I’ve posted my book notes on this blog. Whenever I finish a book, I sit down for a couple of hours and type the ideas, quotes, and lessons I found the most insightful and share them with the world. This is fun, and I like doing it, but I want to share more of what I read and learn as I read and learn it, not a few months down the road.

So, starting now, I’ll share small book excerpts to help others learn about the people, ideas, and inventions that shaped history one post at a time.

Every post will be categorized under Book Excerpt and tagged with the respective book so I can see all the posts it has when I’ve finished reading it.

For now, this won’t be a newsletter. I deeply believe that the rise of newsletters killed old-fashioned blogs. Instead of random posts on interesting ideas, everything is now polished and serious on the web. That’s fine for the Times, but I want to see what the people I admire read and learn from on a Tuesday night. One of the best examples of this is Austin Kleon’s blog.

When I press “Send” on a newsletter edition, I feel so much pressure to perform for others. This inhibits me from spouting off two to three posts in a day if I’m reading an incredible book.

So, for now, you can follow via RSS feed. If you like what I’m doing, subscribe here for a weekly digest of the prior week’s posts and any other cool things I find online.

Here are a few examples of what I mean.
